Don’t count books — measure the gap
Ten thousand dark romance titles doesn’t mean dark romance is done. If readers are still asking for a specific stack — say, morally grey + workplace + a particular heat level — and few books deliver it, that niche is wide open inside a “crowded” subgenre. Zoom in from subgenre to trope stack.
A 3-step reality check
1. Name the exact stack, not the subgenre. 2. Look at demand — are readers actively requesting it? 3. Look at supply — how many books truly deliver that exact stack well? High demand + thin real supply = go, regardless of how “full” the subgenre looks.
