Some forty-seven years ago, Margaret Hawke started taking women off the mountain — survivors of doomsday sects, polygamist compounds, megachurches, captivity, and the kind of harm the world outside did not have a name for yet. They came up the gravel access road in coats too big for them, and Maggie Hawke fed them, named them on a list nobody knew about, and let them stay as long as they needed. Two of them are buried in the family graveyard under stones with no last names. Maggie has been gone since 2025. Her five sons are still running the door.

Five cult-survivor heroines, each with her own recovery arc and her own language for what was done to her, walk up that road across five books — and stay.
