The Series

Hellgate County is a small town in the Pacific Northwest with one firehouse, one bookstore, one elementary school, and a volunteer chaplain who has been at every funeral in the county for fifteen years. From Memorial Day weekend through the first weekend of December, a serial arsonist burns Hellgate County down one structure at a time — and one by one, the five firefighters of Station 14 fall, hot and fast, for the women caught in his escalating game. The case threads through every book. The reveal lands in the finale. The found family closes ranks.

The series voice is dual first person, dialogue-forward, and structurally disciplined: every couple performs a surname/first-name introduction handshake, every chapter closes with a reason to turn the page. Threaded beneath all five romances: the chaplain who whispers the Lord moves through smoke in every book — until the heroine of the finale quotes the line back at him with a match six inches from her feet.

The second fire comes, then the third, and Margot pulls the historic Hellgate arson file in Cap’s home office at two in the morning and finds a six-year-old probie’s death with an inconclusive accelerant finding — and the responding captain on page two. The state office pulls her off the case before she can sign the finding. She quits the assignment. She moves into Cap’s house. He breaks the first one before midnight, when MARLOW PRUITT sits down at the bar in a leather jacket and tells him he is a baby, and she is twenty-six, and she is not a baby, and she would like another whiskey. Marlow is back in Hellgate for the worst week of her life: her crisis-communications career at a Seattle tech firm has just imploded, and she is sleeping in her childhood bedroom in the chief’s house.

By Thursday at one in the morning she has a roadmap of every fire in Hellgate drawn in red Sharpie on Finn’s comforter, and a name in the margin, underlined once: Linus Voss. By Friday morning Margot’s cabin has been targeted with a warning fire. By Saturday evening Margot has called the chaplain to the station for a bait meeting, left her notebook on the kitchen table, and watched him sign her case with a small pencil dot at the end of his name. That night, Linus Voss makes a phone call to Margot at Cap’s kitchen table from a number she has not given him.

CAMI ORTIZ drives into Hellgate County under state escort on a Tuesday morning in November because her sister has stopped answering her phone. The man waiting at the bay door of Station 14 is REED WHITLOCK — fire marshal, the dispatcher’s son, the only adult in town who has been quietly holding the line for six months without raising his voice. He has not been in the bed of a woman in six years. Cami says don’t call me ma’am at six-fifty-four in the rain. He half-smiles for the first time in twenty-six years.

The chaplain who has been changing his name and lighting fires across the Pacific Northwest for fifty-one years has decided that the only honest cleansing is one with witnesses. Marlow’s research breaks open six decades of Linus Voss’s identities, back to an unnamed seventeen-year-old at the side of a barn in 1979. When a propane tank ignites under a booth at the south end of Main Street and a handwritten note is delivered to the firehouse by a boy on a bicycle, the case team explodes into motion.

The series finale at its most clinically and emotionally precise — a travel-nurse heroine who has triaged the worst nights a city can produce, and a fire marshal whose father died in a structure collapse with his mother on the radio at dispatch. In the side aisle of the chaplain’s own church, Cami quotes his verbal tic back at him in clinical register, and the match drops to concrete. At midnight, Cap asks Margot to marry him. Three weeks later, all five couples are at the riverside bonfire.
